How E-Commerce Is Getting It Wrong
Create innovative products using well-sourced raw materials. Engaging social media influencers to showcase your latest product launch. Utilizing data to provide an outstanding web and app experience. These are the kind of things that online retailers imagine when they are launching an enterprise. These are the exciting aspects of the e-commerce industry, but they’re just one aspect of.
The other half is in my field of expertise of logistics and supply chain. This is the everyday every day task of taking all the ideas people imagine, placing them in boxes and then delivering them to customers. While many people consider this part of the thing as a given, it ought to be at the top of the mind. If you consider it, there are only two main ways that customers engage with your brand’s image The fun stuff for example, making use of a product and the delivery and shopping experience.
It is easy to understand what I am talking about by looking through one-star reviews on Amazon.com. Although this is somewhat of a hot topic but one thing is for certain when a product arrives damaged or in a bad state that will result in a large number of reviews with one star ratings. It only takes just a handful of one-star reviews to bring a product down the list of recommended products which means it is likely to be away from consideration by most buyers. Thus, delivery is an important factor. It’s true.
Ideally, you want to ensure that your item will arrive at the home of your customer perfect. It shouldn’t be wet, damaged or late or suffer from any of the other issues; anything else than that can seriously affect the experience of your customers. This is fulfillment for e-commerce and it must be done right.
What are the best ways to make sure you get the right results? Although hiring a logistics professional is the best option however, it’s helpful to be aware of the various considerations that go into. Here are some things you need to consider when it comes to fulfillment and delivery.
To Amazon or Not?
The best aspect of Amazon is it’s Amazon. If you’re using Amazon’s Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) program, your item will be delivered (and the best part is that it’ll come) with an Amazon box bearing Amazon branding, and delivered through one of the Amazon driver. It’s an acceptable experience in some cases however it’s similar to fast food. You’re aware of what you’re getting, however you’re probably not going to love it.
Size and Shape
Understanding the packaging for e-commerce begins with knowing what’s not traditional packaging. In large-box stores, you’ll want to opt to the shelves and use vibrant colors. The outside is what is important. It should pop from the exterior. When it comes to e-commerce it’s that way: the interior is the first thing to be addressed. It is important to ensure that the packaging is the correct size for your product and when it’s pulled out, you will get the best unboxing experience. Remember that you can add additional features to make your experience memorable for your customers -for e.g. You can include samples, inserts, extra materials, and much more. You’re in a lot of control over your experience and must take advantage of this.
Hard and Fast
When a package is placed on a shelf at the big-box store the odds are that it’s been used by five to 10 people. Maximum. However, an e-commerce product could be in the fingers of 25 to 30 individuals. Therefore, the packaging’s exterior needs to be sturdy. If the product is shipped to an environment that is wet then that should be taken into account too. It’s important to work with partners who are aware of all this, and ensure that your clients receive the item in an unharmed perfect condition.
Delivery Services Aren’t Equal
Although you’ve probably been familiar with the majority of major delivery companies however, you may not know that each one has distinct advantages and disadvantages. Certain are best suited for heavy products, while others are more suitable for less fragile products. Some are faster, whereas others offer greater reach. For instance, the United States Postal Service, for example is the sole carrier that delivers to every home every day, making it perfect for deliveries to remote areas. It is likely that there will be the perfect delivery service for your items and you must consult with a logistics professional to find out who it is.
The way that consumers are treated by the product is an crucial aspect of how they feel about it. In certain instances like Apple the experience could greatly improve the pleasure that the item provides. However, in other cases, it could be harmful and even problematic. When you are responsible for this vital aspect of branding your own, or you ensure that an expert partner is employed to assist your brand in every aspect of it It is likely that you should put at least a little of your attention on the underlying aspects of the e-commerce. It’s too crucial to leave out.

The growth and expansion of e-commerce has put this model of business in the eye of many who want at ways “leave the rat race”, “live life on their terms” and so on.

I’ve been on this path from a variety of angles , and my intention is to impart my lessons learned the difficult way in order to guide you on the least resistance path and avoid making the same mistakes I’ve made.
Here are the things that I would have known prior to starting my e-commerce company:
Dropshipping is a difficult process
What is dropshipping you asking? This is an online-based model in which you don’t have to hold inventory. When a sale occurs, you purchase the product from the supplier and then direct ship the product to the buyer. This isn’t a simple approach to introduce yourself to the world of e-commerce due to the many moving components. It is essential to set up your own online shop, locate items, promote your business, and offer customers with support.
This experience of a baptism of fire in the world of online shopping isn’t meant for the weak-minded or lazy entrepreneurs because you must master multiple capabilities simultaneously and fast. If I had the chance to do it all over again, I could be able to skip this method entirely and saved plenty of dollars. But I believe that dropping shipping served me well and helped me complete an excellent training.
People are looking for speedy shipping
Now, you’ve completed the first sale through your online store Your product is now on its way to the buyer. What now? Get ready to put on the hat of customer service. It is an alert. Your customers will be contacting you to ask where their products are. Why? Because they’ve been spoiled through the Amazon Prime Two-Day Delivery.
The bad news is that your customers will be expecting the same options for shipping along with the same speed and efficiency as Amazon.
Be ready to take on Amazon
Here’s where the things become exciting. If you’re dropshipping products to the US specifically then your US customers are bound to be able to access the Amazon account. With that you’re facing a difficult fight. It’s the battle for trust. The majority of people prefer to believe in Amazon instead of spending their hard-earned cash on an item from an online store they’ve never ever heard of. People are looking for comfort.
It’s a challenge! What can you do to help is certain aspects such as the availability of a 24 hour helpline available on your website to offer service and ease to those contemplating purchasing from your site. This alone will help boost the conversion rate.
If you’re not able to beat them, join them.
Amazon FBA. If you’ve not heard of the term , and you’re looking to establish an online store then go to Google and begin researching. Amazon FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) can be described as an online e-commerce model that lets you label your product white and send your product directly to Amazon’s fulfillment centers. You can also create an account and place your item in front of millions of buyers on Amazon.
Additionally you can also take advantage of Amazon’s speedy shipping options, and, when a sale is made, Amazon picks, packs and delivers your item to the buyer. You basically join forces with the largest online retailer around the globe, using their multi-billion-dollar logistics services and they handle the customer’s needs.
I’d like to have gone straight to this model right from the beginning. According to me, this model of e-commerce has the least risk and could aid you in maximizing your earnings potential, if you choose the right products to sell. To conclude, working involved in the field of e-commerce requires a particular mentality. It is essential to be business-oriented and put profits at the center of each move you make.
Remember that when selling an item online, there are many costs to get the product into your customer the door. Cost of unit, advertising budget shipping costs, and so on. Thus, the purpose in the game is that you create something called “leftover”. If you eliminate all of your expenses it is important to leave money over, that can be referred to as profit. If you do that If you partner with Amazon You could soon start experiencing some amazing sales figures because Amazon is an absolute giant!
Sell on Amazon, eBay or both in 2022 – What’s the right answer?
E-commerce sellers now have many options for selling their products online. Shopify, Walmart and Etsy all provide sellers with the chance to sell their products online.
Amazon and eBay are two of the most popular platforms. You might want to sell on one of these online marketplaces, as they are the oldest and most popular.
How can you tell which one will work best for you?
Both have their merits, so let’s take a look at the differences between these marketplaces and see which one is best for you.
Are Amazon and eBay trusted by consumers?
Both Amazon and eBay have been around since mid-1990s. Amazon launched under the name Cadabra in July 1994. It changed its trade name in 1995 to Amazon. eBay followed suit in September 1995.
Amazon is a strong competitor in consumer trust. Amazon is so determined to win and maintain the trust of customers that it has included in its vision, mission, values.
This focus seems to be paying off. According to a survey conducted in the United States, 73% of consumers consider Amazon a good company.
Amazon is known for its ease of returning products. Amazon’s A-Z Guarantee guarantees that customers will receive a full refund if the product is not as described or delivered on time.
eBay’s return policy for items is more complicated than that of Amazon. They will not accept returns or give full refunds. Sellers can also tick eBay’s “No Returns” box. This leaves buyers without recourse if they are not satisfied with the product.
You may believe that selling is a good thing. It can actually be very detrimental to your business.
Setting your listing to “No Returns” sends signals to potential buyers that you don’t believe in what you are selling. What types of businesses are you willing to buy from as a customer? Do you prefer those who support you after purchase or those that take your money and run?
Amazon provides support after purchase to build brand loyalty and give buyers the security they need so they feel confident taking a chance with a product that they may not otherwise buy.
You also get the benefit of trust as a seller through their platform.
Fulfillment methods for Amazon vs. eBay
You have two options when it comes to fulfilling orders for eBay sellers: either pack and ship your own orders or hire a third party fulfillment center to do so.
Amazon offers two options. You can either fulfill your orders yourself (Fulfillment By Merchant; FBM), or you can have Amazon fulfill them for you (Fulfillment Amazon; FBA).
Amazon FBA is the real difference.
Amazon allows sellers to manage a large portion of their business, while eBay requires them to do so.
They can store, pick, pack, and ship your products for you. And don’t forget about returns and refunds! Amazon gives you the opportunity to focus on other aspects of your business.
Amazon FBA is also a time-saver.
Amazon charges more if you use their FBA program for fulfillment of your orders. However, the cost difference is significantly lower when you consider the cost of shipping, packaging, and storing your products.
It is up to you how you fulfill your products. It’s nice to have the option to make your own decisions, something that you won’t get if you sell on eBay.
How much does it cost to sell on Amazon or eBay?
The fees charged by eBay are generally lower than those charged by Amazon.
eBay’s fees
These are the fees that you’ll have to pay when selling on eBay
- Insertion fees are the charges a seller pays to create a listing. eBay states that sellers receive 50 zero (free) listings for insertion fees each month. There are also options for additional listings if you have a store.
- Final value fees: eBay charges a percentage based upon the final sale price of your product. This does not include shipping and handling.
This is the basic “Final Value” fee schedule for most items. It also includes the appropriate “Insertion fees”.
- Processing fees for eBay’s managed payments system: As eBay requires sellers to use their managed payment system, this fee is added to the ‘Final Value’ fee.
- Additional listing upgrade fees: These charges are only applicable if you wish to create a unique, distinctive listing. You can add a subtitle or bold font to your listing, as well as setting a minimum/reserved price.
The fees for listing upgrades on eBay quickly add up. You can calculate how much you will need to pay to list your product on eBay by using the fee calculator.
eBay charges $5.02 for a product with a fixed price of $22.95 in its Baby & Toddler Clothing category. We would also have to pay shipping costs if we wanted to offer free shipping.
However, eBay’s fees for selling are lower than Amazon’s overall.
Amazon’s charges
Amazon charges fees based on the product sold and its fulfillment method (FBA or FBM).
Let’s look at one of our Million Dollar Case Study products (MDCS), Washable Pee Pads, to get an idea about the fees associated selling a product FBA.
Jungle Snugs currently sells for $32.99. Amazon’s FBA calculator can be used to calculate the fees for selling the pee pad FBA or FBM.
Not shipping included in the total cost of ‘Your Fulfillment’ Shipping costs will be added to your profit margin if you sell FBM.
Selling FBM means that you will only be charged the Selling on Amazon’ fees. These include the Amazon Referral Fee and the Variable Closing Fee. FBA sellers are also responsible for these fees.
FBA sellers must pay an additional fee to Amazon for the ‘Selling on Amazon’ fees. This fee is based on the product’s weight and dimensions.
This fee includes ‘Monthly storage’ and a ‘Fulfillment’ fee.
If you sell a product on Amazon at $32.99, and you are an FBA seller you will need to pay $11.55 in fees. If you sell the same product at the same price as FBM sellers, you will need to pay $4.95 before shipping costs.
These are not the only fees that you will have to pay as an Amazon seller. No matter what fulfillment method you use, all Amazon sellers must pay these fees:
- You can choose from two types of seller accounts when you sell on Amazon: professional or individual. You will need to pay $0.99 per unit if you are selling as an individual. For professional sellers, however, a $39.99 monthly subscription fee is required.
- Refund Administration Fees: Although these fees are only applicable to customers who request a refund, it is important to note that Amazon charges for reimbursements. This fee will be either $5.00 or 20% of the refund charge, whichever is lower.

Amazon Prime subscription
Amazon Prime is a key feature Amazon offers that eBay does not. This may not seem to be a benefit for shoppers, much like Amazon’s return policies, but it is the main reason Amazon has such an engaged customer base.
Amazon Prime subscribers are more likely to buy from Amazon because they pay a monthly fee for speedy delivery.
Loyal Prime members also shop at Amazon before shopping elsewhere online. They spend money on Amazon during major holidays, such as Black Friday or Prime Day.
Prime users number over 112,000,000 in the U.S., and over 150,000,000 worldwide. This means that sellers can immediately access a large audience who shop on the site frequently.
What products are you allowed to sell on Amazon and eBay?
eBay was launched in 1995 and has been a platform for other businesses to do business since then. Amazon hasn’t. Amazon has not. Instead, it has transformed into a retailer and a marketplace for third party sellers.
eBay does not restrict the products that can be sold on its site, unlike Amazon. eBay sellers can sell anything, from brand-new products to used and worn items. Illegal items are not allowed.
This is where eBay really shines.
People prefer eBay to Amazon when looking for second-hand goods. Its auction model makes it easy to sell used items and allows buyers to buy them at affordable prices.
Selling used books is the only exception. Amazon is, for the most part, the best marketplace for sellers looking to sell used books. This makes sense considering that Amazon was originally an online bookstore.
However, most shoppers prefer Amazon when they are looking for a brand-new item or one in perfect condition. Amazon is used by 66% of shoppers to search for new products.
Overall, Amazon is the best option to sell high-quality products with a ready-to buy audience.
You can also make your Amazon business more profitable by doing product research and finding the right supplier.
However, depending on the business model you choose, both platforms could work. It’s up to you to decide whether you want to start a business selling new products or second-hand goods. Maybe you plan to do both!
Amazon and eBay both have clear purposes for their respective types of customers.
Amazon or eBay? You have the choice
It’s time for you to make a decision. Amazon or eBay? Or both!
No matter which platform you choose, Amazon or eBay, there has never been a better moment to start your online business.
